Our potions honor the body as nature. We avoid ingredients that disrupt ecosystems whether inside our bodies, in our communities, or in the environment.

Preservatives + Endocrine Disruptors

  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben)
  • Phthalates (e.g., diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate)
  • Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing agents (DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15, bronopol [2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol])
  • Triclosan, triclocarban

Surfactants + Sulfates

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
  • Ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS)
  • Other alkyl sulfates associated with irritation and aquatic toxicity

Silicones + Non-Biodegradable Polymers

  • Dimethicone
  • Cyclopentasiloxane (D5), cyclohexasiloxane (D6)
  • Trimethylsiloxysilicate
  • Acrylates copolymers (including styrene/acrylates, crosspolymers, and plastic microbeads)

Synthetic Fragrance + Colorants

  • Synthetic ‘fragrance’ (including undisclosed proprietary blends with phthalates and known allergens)
  • Coal tar derivatives
  • Petroleum-derived dyes and lakes (e.g., FD&C and D&C colorants not derived from mineral or botanical sources)

Petrochemical-Derived Ingredients

  • Mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin
  • Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and ethoxylated compounds (may contain 1,4-dioxane residues) Our Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) is non-sulfated and non-ethoxylated
  • Ethanolamines: monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA)

Restricted Preservative Systems

  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Benzalkonium chloride
  • Synthetic quaternary ammonium compounds (excluding limited use of BTMS, see note below)

Transition Commitment

  • Behentrimonium methosulfate (BTMS): Limited, transitional use. Complete phase-out by 2026.

Additional Restrictions

  • Nanoparticles: zinc oxide (nano), titanium dioxide (nano)
  • Animal testing: prohibited across all ingredients and finished products (we do use beeswax and honey)
  • Petroleum-derived film formers and fillers inconsistent with biodegradability standards

Commitment to Local, Organic, and Regenerative Sourcing

Fat and the Moon prioritizes ingredients that honor ecosystems, farmers, and communities. Our sourcing principles include:

  • Local and Regional Sourcing whenever possible to reduce carbon footprint and support community resilience.
  • Organic and Non-GMO Ingredients to protect soil health, biodiversity, and long-term planetary wellness.
  • Ethically and Fairly Traded Botanicals sourced with transparency to ensure that growers and harvesters are respected and compensated fairly. (We love you Equal Exchange!)
  • Regenerative Agriculture Partnerships that actively restore soil, water cycles, and biodiversity.
  • Minimal Processing & Whole Plant Integrity to retain the vitality, phytochemistry, and spirit of botanicals.

Note: Fat and the Moon formulates to exceed most global “clean beauty” restricted lists (Credo, Sephora Clean, EU Annex II/III). Ingredient sourcing documentation available upon request.
