Fat Crush: Alice Sandahl on Music, Ritual, and Feminine Mysticism

Some people move through the world on a deeper frequency—and Alice Sandahl is one of them.
Musician, artist, educator, and all-around radiant human, Alice is our latest Fat Crush and we’re so honored to celebrate her today.
You might know her from the surf-psych spellwork of La Luz, but now she’s stepping fully into her own spotlight. Alice’s second solo album, Hologram, drops June 5th on Slouch Records—and we’re already obsessed. Luminous and expansive, Hologram folds synth, spirit, and storytelling into a dreamy-yet-grounded sonic landscape. It’s a full-body expression of Alice’s creative power—an album that holds space for all the contradictions, questions, and tenderness of being alive.
We caught up with Alice to talk about self-exploration, morning rituals, mentorship, and yes—Zorro.
Fat and the Moon: What is your work in the world?
Alice Sandahl: The hyphenate title I give myself is “musician-artist-educator” because all three of these hats in my work are intertwined.
As a musician, my work is mostly about the complexity of the human experience. The depth of emotions and often contradictory feelings we have as we move through the world. It is my hope that through my work, I help to reinforcethe interconnection that we all have and allow others to feel seen and understood through the music I create and release. The artist part is always exploring other visual and experimental ways to express my creativity. And the educator role is where I get to actively support others in their own creative missions.
I feel so strongly that knowledge and learning is empowering because it means more tools and information to support you. As an educator, my work is about asking my students the right questions to keep their creative spark alive and support them as they explore their ideas and their voices. Mentoring other musicians as they navigate their creative lives is such an honor because I get to witness them face their fears and pursue their dreams.
FM: What do you see happening in the world that you want to support?
AS: It seems like we’re living in a time where self-exploration as a value is more common and even encouraged. I love living in a time where it’s common to talk about the importance of our relationship to ourselves as a means to deepening our relationship with others (and Spirit, if you’re into that *wink). So much of being an artist requires connecting with yourself, understanding yourself deeply, and honoring all of your parts. A huge part of my work as a mentor to other musicians is supporting them as they dive deep into their personal self-exploration.
FM: How do you nourish your creativity or energy?
AS: I have worked hard to create awareness around any inner villain or critic voices that show up and counter them with kindness and love. This is probably one of the biggest ways I nourish my creativity, because if we don’t catch those voices they can snuff out our light. To me, it is nourishing to use really kind internal dialogue with myself as a way to care for my energy and creativity. I also have a regular meditation practice each morning that is an important part of how I start my day. I think of it as important “spiritual gym” time that allows me to get quiet and check-in with myself, my intuition, and the present moment.
FM: What is something you're looking forward to personally or professionally?
AS: Well the big thing I’m looking forward to right now is the release of my second full length album Hologram! I’m eager to let it out and watch it do it’s thing in the world. It’s funny, because so often by the time you release a record you’ve had it finished for a long time so it’s fun to see these songs become alive to fresh, new listeners. And in support of that release, I’m excited for this East Coast tour I have coming up. It will be my first time touring my solo work on the East Coast and touring around New York City, so I’m just tickled about that!
FM: What Fat and the Moon potion (or potions) is your favorite?
AS: It’s really hard to narrow this down! I guess I’d probably have to say the Sensitive Pit Cream. I am SUPER picky about scents and so many natural deodorants are still just too perfume-y for me. I also tend to react to deodorant, so finding this amazing smelly natural deodorant that actual works has been a game changer. I also really LOVE the All Cream. It’s light but still moisturizing, and you can use it for so many things. It can be your night face cream or just a sweet relief to dry hands if you’re out in the desert. And the subtle smell is so lovely.
FM: Who was your childhood crush?
AS: HA! My first crush was Zorro. Holy crap I thought he was so cute and I loved how he had a sword and rode a black horse. So when the movie came out in the 90’s (or whenever it was) I was SO excited. hahahah I don’t know what else to say about that, but it was a sweet romantic crush I had lots of youthful daydreams about.
