Lather Consciously: Why We're Ditching BTMS
Lather Responsibly: Why We’re Ditching BTMS
We’re always looking for ways to deepen our commitment to earth-honoring bod care. And when new research raises red flags, we listen.
That’s why we’re removing BTMS (Behentrimonium Methosulfate) from our hair care formulas—starting now.
BTMS is a synthetic conditioning agent often found in “natural” hair products as a gentler alternative to silicones. It’s considered safe for human use in small amounts, but the story doesn’t stop there.
BTMS is a quaternary ammonium compound: part of a class of chemicals known as quats. These compounds are poorly biodegradable and tend to accumulate in waterways once rinsed down the drain. The more they build up, the more they disrupt.
Here’s what that means:
Studies have shown BTMS and similar compounds can be toxic to aquatic life, especially:
✺ Algae – the foundation of aquatic food webs
✺ Invertebrates – a keystone species in freshwater ecosystems
✺ Fish – particularly in early life stages
Even in low concentrations, quats can interfere with reproduction, growth, and cellular function in these organisms. Once in the environment, they stick around—and we’re not into leaving a chemical trail.
So we’re making a shift.
We’ve already reformulated our Shampoo and Conditioner Bars to be BTMS-free, using a fully biodegradable, plant-based alternative that offers the same silky, detangling magic—without the downstream damage. It’s non-toxic, gentle on sensitive scalps, and safe for the waterways we love.
What’s next?
We’re phasing BTMS out of our liquid Day to Day Shampoo and Conditioner by the end of the year. Because to us, clean bod care should be non-toxic all the way through.
BTMS will join our no-go list, alongside:
-
Sulfates: Harsh surfactants that can strip your scalp
-
Silicones: Give the illusion of health while blocking moisture
-
Parabens: Synthetic preservatives linked to hormone disruption
We want our potions to feel amazing, do what they say, and leave the Earth better than we found it. Thanks for holding us to a higher standard—and for holding space for progress.
