Fat Crush: Sana Javeri Kadri on Spices, Herbal Medicine, and Global Healing

This month, our Fat Crush has us salivating. Our latest heartthrob, Sana Javeri Kadri, is the brilliant founder and CEO of Diaspora Co. At Fat and the Moon we’re always inspired by mission-driven brands who dually create beautiful goods while empowering change which is why we are head over heels for Sana.

Diaspora Co. is a queer, WOC, and immigrant-owned/led biz committed to building a radically new and truly equitable spice trade. They offer more than 30 single origin spices grown by their family farm-partners in India and Sri Lanka and have expanded into masalas, merch and so much more.

Diaspora pays their farm partners an average of 4x the commodity price and 30% harvest advances, as well as zero interest loans towards processing and milling so that their partners can scale without having to turn to the predatory lenders that South Asian agriculture is sadly riddled with.

Get Ready Folks: Coming Soon (Very Soon!)

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the relaunch of Diaspora’s Kadipatta Plant, which has plans to be back any day now! Known as curry leaf trees or as Murraya Koenigii, kadipatta plants are beautiful and ubiquitous additions to many South Asian and diasporic homes. Sign up for the waitlist to get first dibs on your very own curry leaf baby + access to their community channel to help you actually keep it alive!

Diaspora’s Work in the World

The Farm Worker Fund allows Diaspora to more directly provide support to workers on their partners' farms and give them agency on what that support looks like.

“The FWF is so important to us because it allows us to make an impact (big and small) in the lives of the people who work very hard to grow our delicious spices and play a direct role in the future of regenerative agriculture. We just shared the initial updates from a survey with our community, which you can read here!”

Ruby Red now ft. Diaspora Turmeric

Did you all hear? Our Ruby Red Lip Tint now features the golden hues of Diaspora’s Pragati Turmeric. Ruby Red differs from her sis’ Lip & Cheek Stain, providing a true cherry popsicle red tint alongside lip loving, warming spices of clove and orange.

Diaspora is offering you, our FM Plant Posse, 10% off at diasporaco.com with code DCxFATM22. Sign up for their newsletter to stay connected on their latest products and impacts.

Let’s remember dirt is not the problem, chemicals are. Chemicals affect our endocrine system, throwing wrenches into the complex communication of our hormones. Chemicals don’t break down in the environment, they get passed through the systems of other creatures, disrupting their bodies.

Four recipes we'll be throwing down this season. We see the holidaze as a time to revel in the ginger and spice, to balance all the things that aren’t so nice. The flavors of the winter seasons are warming, stimulating, reminders of our sensual capacity.
