Take Back the Term: Clean Beauty Redefined Through Herbal Transparency

Whenever someone describes Fat and the Moon as ‘clean skincare’ or ‘clean cosmetics’ we inwardly cringe…

We get where they are coming from, we want terms that describe non-toxic, wholesome  products and it is crucial for our bods and the environment bods to have people wholeheartedly move towards non-toxic options.

Buuuuuut…

The term ‘clean’ is pretty charged. Many of us, especially those of us assigned female at birth, have been saddled with cultural conditioning about the inherent ‘uncleanliness’ of our bods. We’ve got 32 flavors of sprays that cover the natural scent of our coochies, and entire aisles filled with products promising fixes to our deepest insecurities. The subliminal and overt message is we aren’t ok as we are.

The opposite of ‘clean’ is ‘dirty’ which is different from non-toxic.

Dirt is non-toxic, the fertile loam teams with life. We believe we all need a bit more dirt to dose ourselves with multitudes of ancient and protective microbiota.

Let’s remember dirt is not the problem, chemicals are. Chemicals affect our endocrine system, throwing wrenches into the complex communication of our hormones. Chemicals don’t break down in the environment, they get passed through the systems of other creatures, disrupting their bodies.

‘Clean’ is different from ‘cleanse’.

Cleansing is an act, a necessary one for maintenance, hygiene and well-being. Cleansing helps us move out the spent to make way for the new beginnings.

We prefer ‘good enough to eat plant potions’ or ‘environmentally aligned bod care’ or ‘cosmic adornment’ or simply ‘non-toxic personal care’ to ‘clean beauty’. We love a non-toxic message alongside our non-toxic potions.

The mouth is our first digestive organ. As soon as we begin to eat, the acidity of our mouth changes to begin breaking down our food. The health of our teeth and gums is greatly influenced by the ecosystem of our mouths, and the health of our mouths greatly impacts the whole bod since it is the entry point of our digestive and respiratory system.
